Literary

I represent both authors and publishers in negotiating publishing agreements for both traditional print and online content, assisting in clearance and defamation reviews, and the licensing of the literary works for use in other formats or media. These services include matters, such as:
  • An author’s engagement of agents, managers, and other professionals

  • Copyright protection and licensing of literary works

  • Clearance and defamation reviews

  • Arrangements between multiple authors

  • Publishing agreements

  • Licensing or selling (or acquiring) rights to use literary works or portions of a work

This representation includes, among other things, preparing and negotiating:
  • Publishing agreements with or for traditional, independent, and online publishers

  • Life story rights agreements

  • Collaboration and co-authorship agreements with other authors or literary assistants

  • Agreements for commissioned literary works

  • Agreement with independent editors

  • Manuscript submission agreements

  • Literary agency agreements

  • Clearances and releases for copyrights, trademarks, other intellectual property rights, and rights of publicity used in the literary work

  • Agreements with screenwriters

  • Option purchase agreements with film or television producers and other content providers, including any additional writing or consulting services of author

  • Licenses for use of the work, including audiobooks, electronic uses, and any subsidiary rights

  • Purchase and sale of literary rights

In additional to these specific agreements, I also represent independent authors and the professionals who work with them in the preparation and negotiation of contractual business arrangements that are generally applicable in connection with the representation of artists. These are described in greater detail at Agreements with Artists and Advisors.
